“But if I was I wouldn’t want many more because giving birth was traumatic. Thank you though for your blessings.”
The now 26-year-old welcomed her first child – a baby girl named Shai – with her partner Cordae who is an American rapper, singer and songwriter.
Last December, she opened up about her pregnancy and delivery journey in an interview with InStyle. The tennis star explained that she had tested positive for Group B streptococus, which can put a newborn baby at risk of sepsis, meningitis or a stillbirth and experienced a difficult and painful 12-hour labour.
“I don’t think people know how hard pregnancy is; no one really talks about it as much,” she told InStyle at the time.
“Going into it, you kind of think: Oh, it’s this beautiful journey. But it’s kind of rough.”

Of her labour, Osaka recalled it feeling like “the worst pain of [her] life”. But what pushed her through was the knowledge that “if [she] could get through this, then everything else will feel very easy”.
Soon after that interview, Osaka posed with her daughter for the first time in a powerful photoshoot and interview with Glamour magazine.
“My world turned into a completely different world in one night,” she admitted in January, just days out from her return the to Australian Open.
“I feel so strong,” she says of her life since childbirth. “I just feel like I can do anything and nothing will bother me, and the pain tolerance has definitely increased a lot from that.”

Shai is Osaka and Cordae’s first, and currently their only, child together.
The pair announced they were expecting a baby in January last year, with Osaka sharing a photo of a sonogram to Instagram with the caption: “Can’t wait to get back on the court but here’s a little life update for 2023.”
She also shared a statement in English and Japanese in the slides of her Instagram post, sharing: “I know that I have so much to look forward to in the future, one thing I’m looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone, ‘That’s my mum,’ haha.”
